DUBUQUE — Matching a season high with 14 hits in the opening game victory, the Central College baseball team split a pair of 8-7 games Friday against the University of Dubuque.
The Dutch (7-13, 4-10 American Rivers Conference) had 24 hits in the doubleheader against the Spartans (9-12, 7-7 conference), the most the team has had this season.
"It was good to see our guys putting together some competitive at-bats," assistant coach Tyler Willis said. "We have an inexperienced group but they've stayed the course on taking the right approach and are starting to see the benefits."
Central's catcher Trevor Kimm (senior, Urbandale) had 4 RBI in the first game and 2 RBI in the second game on three hits and a sacrifice fly.
"Trevor's starting to break out," Willis said. "He's seeing the ball very well and he's using all fields. When he's driving the ball to right center and turning on balls to left center field, that's when you know he's locked in. He's sticking with a good approach and he's reaping the rewards of that."
Kurby Vowels (sophomore, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) secured the win after 4.1 innings of relief work, scattering five hits and allowed one run. Landon Vander Leest (junior, Pella) moved over from first base to strike out the final batter of the game to earn the save. Marcus Wenzel (senior, Chicago, Ill., Luther North College Prep) started and went 2.1 innings.
"Marcus would tell you he didn't have his best stuff today but he competed and kept us in it," Willis said. "Kurby did a great job coming in and holding down the fort. Landon showed how big of a role he can have whether he starts or closes."
Vander Leest had a pair of hits in each contest and shortstop Kyle Hauser (senior, Poplar Grove, Ill., Belvidere North HS) had three base knocks in the nightcap.
Ryan Riddle (senior, Omaha, Neb., Mount Michael HS) took the pitching loss in the second game, going 5.2 innings and striking out four. He surrendered four runs on six hits.
The two teams continue their four-game series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Dubuque.
