WAVERLY — Two Central College women's indoor track and field records fell on the first day of the Division III Elite Indoor Championships Friday.
The Dutch women are sixth in the team scoring with 15 points and sixth in the men's scoring with 19 points. Wartburg leads the field in the women's and men's team scoring.
Holly Forrester (senior, Manhattan, Kan., Rock Creek HS) was already the school-record holder in the triple jump but increased that mark to 37 feet, 7.25 inches in a winning effort. She finished a disappointing fourth in the league meet last week.
"I think she was super excited to have another opportunity to jump," coach
Brandon Sturman said. "It ended up being a really good meet with good competition. She really stepped up to the challenge and gave it all she had.
The quartet of
Mari Stein (sophomore, Okoboji),
Elsie Thoreson (freshman, Pella),
Alyssa Mayhew (freshman, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) and
Caroline McMartin (freshman, Pella) also set a school record in the distance medley relay in 12:22.90. The team finished sixth.
"We're getting closer to competing on a national level," Sturman said. "With three freshmen on that team, we're excited about where the future is headed. It was a great way to finish the day."
In the men's 200-meter dash,
Joe Stein (freshman, Milford, Okoboji HS) placed third with a time of 22.30 seconds, now No. 2 in program history. He also qualified second in the 60-meter hurdles (6.93 seconds).
"Joe was definitely more focused on the 200," Sturman said. "He was not happy with how she performed and he went out there today and really had a strong showing."
The men's distance medley relay team of
Caleb Silver (sophomore, Conrad, BCLUW HS),
Nolan Reynolds (sophomore, Montezuma),
Noah Jorgenson (freshman, Sidney) and
Will DeHaan (junior, DeWitt, Central DeWitt HS) was also sixth in 10:23.12.
"It was definitely a good time for those guys," Sturman said. "They each ran a good race."
Brody Klein (freshman, Rainier, Wash.) was third in the pentathlon with 3,137 points.
After winning the American Rivers Conference pentathlon title last week,
Lucas Heitz (sophomore, Adel, ADM HS) qualified eighth for Saturday's 60-meter hurdles final in 8.65 seconds.
Jonathan Bossou (sophomore, Ottumwa) just missed qualifying, placing 10
th in 8.79 seconds.
In the women's 60-meter hurdles,
Kiki Pingel (senior, Pella) qualified for tomorrow's finals in third (9.13 seconds) with
Mary Gray (senior, West Des Moines, Waukee HS) also qualified in sixth (9.30 seconds).
Pole vaulters
Tanner Johnson (senior, Gallatin, Mo.) and
Cali Coffman (sophomore, Leawood, Kan. Blue Valley HS) both scored team points, with Johnson placing fifth (13-7.75) in the men's and Coffman seventh (9-1.5) in the women's.
In the men's weight throw,
Theo Baldus (junior, St. Ansgar) was ninth (51-6.5) and
Abby Marr (sophomore, Riceville) was 12th in the women's weight throw (48-7.25).
Danny Devenuto (junior, Plainfield, Ill., North HS) was 10th in the men's triple jump (40-1.5).
Hadyn Miller (freshman, Iowa Falls, Iowa Falls-Alden HS) was 11th in the 400-meter run (1:00.91) and 12th in the 200-meter run (1:00.91). In the 5,000-meter run,
Hailey Hill (sophomore, Las Vegas, Nev., West Career and Technical Academy) was 14th (19:43.69) and
Kate Hoogensen (freshman, Ankeny, Centennial HS) was 15th (19:49.30).
Jacob Dick (junior, Winterset) was 13th in the men's 200-meter dash (24.46 seconds).
