Central blanks Iowa Wesleyan in volleyball triumph

Dutch pick up 10th win of the season

PELLA — Starting a three-match home stand this week, the Central College volleyball team swept Iowa Wesleyan University 25-19, 25-9, 25-20 Tuesday night.

Central (10-7) has won five of their last six matches overall and 29 straight against the Tigers (1-16).

"I'm really pleased that we were able to get the win," coach Jeanne Czipri said. "And pleased that we were able to get it done in three sets. Looking at the stats, there are some things that we can clean up and things we can be better at."

Czipri used 17 players in the win, including six reserves who only played in the final set.

"I'm grateful that in the second set we played how we should have in order to give some other players an opportunity to play in the third," she said.

Emma Wagler (freshman, middle hitter, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) was one of those six and she took advantage with four kills on seven attempts.

"Emma did a great job," Czipri said.  "She's a hard worker and shows up every day wanting to get better. She's coachable and she's loud, which makes it easy for our setters to find her."

Hallie Uhlig (junior, middle hitter, Colorado Springs, Colo., Palmer Ridge HS) started the match as a middle hitter and was a part of four blocks and notched four kills.

"We always know she is going to get the job done defensively," Czipri said. "It was good to see her get some kills on the board as well."

Ruth Hruska (senior, Brookfield, Ill., Riverside-Brookfield HS) led the way with five kills.  Adisyn Illg (junior, setter, Johnsburg, Ill.) had 14 assists and Landry Luhring (senior, libero, Grundy Center) had 16 digs. In her first action, Sydney Stadler (freshman, defensive specialist, Shawnee, Kan., Mill Valley HS) had a team-high three service aces.

The Dutch have conference matches against Loras College and the University of Dubuque at home this weekend, starting at 6 p.m. Friday night against Loras.
