Central falters after first volleyball set

Dutch can't maintain early lead 1-0 lead

PELLA—A dominant effort in the first set by the Central College volleyball team ran out of steam in a 15-25, 25-14, 25-20, 25-16 loss to Loras College Friday night.

Central (10-8, 1-2 American Rivers Conference) hit .375 in the first set against the Duhawks (14-3, 3-1 conference), notching 11 kills and just two errors on 24 attempts. Central could not maintain the momentum of that 25-15 win and lost the next three sets.

"We played to win in the first set and executed our game plan," coach Jeanne Czipri said. "After that, we did not have our eyes in the right places which made out feet slow. We need to be better with our eyes so we can be better with our feet."

Krissa Larson (senior, outside hitter, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) paced the Dutch offense with 17 kills, her third time this season going over 15 kills.  She had a .400 hitting percentage (17-3-35).

"It was good to see her light it up," Larson said. "I'm really happy with her performance."

Amanda Smith (junior, setter, Tipton) had 20 assists and Landry Luhring (senior, libero, Grundy Center) had 10 digs. Hallie Uhlig (senior, Colorado Springs, Colo., Palmer Ridge HS) contributed on six blocks.

Central hosts the University of Dubuque in another American Rivers Conference match Saturday at 1 p.m.

"Dubuque is no easy match," "They might be 0-3 in the conference, but they are battling every team they play. They always do a good job of adjusting in the match. We know that we can hang with them, we just need to play that way for an entire match and not just one or two sets."
