Dominant doubles teams give Central women’s tennis victory

Central wins 11 of 12 singles matches

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PELLA — Winning all three doubles matches in duals against Nebraska Wesleyan University and Buena Vista University sparked victories over both schools for the Central College women's tennis team Saturday.

The Dutch (4-4, 3-2 A-R-C) were able to beat the Prairie Wolves (1-4, 1-4 A-R-C) 8-1 and the Beavers (0-9, 0-6 A-R-C) 9-0.

The No. 3 doubles team of Katie Larson (sophomore, Fort Madison) and Macy Sharff (sophomore, Oskaloosa) played the tightest match of the day against Nebraska Wesleyan, winning 9-8 (7-3). They received a forfeit against Buena Vista.

"We had nerves in the beginning but overcame that," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "They both had some nice shots but the important thing is that they got over the hump."

Larson also had a 6-1, 6-2 win against the Prairie Wolves and a 6-0, 6-0 victory over the No. 4 player for the Beavers.

"Katie went into singles and just tore her opponents apart," Ferrell said. "I blinked and it was over, it was just that fast. It was really impressive to watch. She's starting to find a nice rhythm and is playing really well."

Central's No. 1 doubles team of Bronwyn Metcalf (sophomore, Pella) and Maddie Hartley (sophomore, Clarinda) won 8-4 in both matches.

"Those two are becoming a nice doubles team," Ferrell said. "It's nice to see them figuring it out."

The No. 2 team of Karleigh Schilling (junior, Swisher, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) and Laurynn Mize (junior, Sycamore, Ill.) had identical 8-1 scores.

As a team, the Dutch won 11 of 12 singles matches.

Central will host Luther College at 4 p.m. next Friday and Wartburg College at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Both matches will be held at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex courts in Pella.

"There's basically five schools who can the conference title," Ferrell said. "And we're running into two of them next weekend. It's going to be a battle and I'm just looking forward to watching this team compete. They have been working so hard."
