Senior day success for Central men’s tennis team

PELLA — All three of the Central College men's tennis seniors played both singles and doubles in a 9-0 Senior Day victory against Northwestern College Tuesday afternoon.

The Dutch (10-7) were able to use their veteran depth to defeat the youthful Red Raiders (1-9).

"They had some very athletic men and they played well," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "It was a fun match to play because they were a respectful team. It was a nice battle."

Josh Phillips (senior, Morton, Ill.) won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and alongside partner Ethan St. John (sophomore, Crystal Lake, Ill., Central HS) secured an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles.

"He's one of those guys who gets you bored really fast when you play him," Ferrell said. "He always gets it back and he doesn't mind running all day. He has an amazing attitude and he plays hard."

The other two seniors, Jackson Lewton (Ankeny, Centennial HS) and Colin Jones (Pella) had matching 6-1, 6-1 victories in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles slots, respectively. The duo won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

"They've done a great job all year and are ready to step up at any given time," Ferrell said. "For as deep as we are, they are part of the reason we have had so much success this year. They're a true testament to what it means to be a part of a team."

William Isiminger (sophomore, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) triumphed 6-4, 6-2 at the top of the lineup. Kris Weeden (junior, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) won his seventh-straight match by a 6-0, 6-1 margin at No. 3. Tanner Finken (freshman, Carroll, Kuemper Catholic HS) blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Isiminger and Brad DiLeo (freshman, Iowa City, West HS) had an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.

Central travels to Indianola Thursday to face Simpson College (7-11, 1-5 conference) for a 3:30 p.m. dual

"There's a lot of pride with Simpson," Ferrell said. "They don't ever stop so we can't take them lightly at all. We'll be ready for them."
