PELLA — After rain forced the location of Thursday's match to switch, the Central College men's tennis team made quick work of Simpson College in a 9-0 victory.
The match between Central (11-7, 6-1 American Rivers Conference) and Simpson (7-12, 1-6 conference) was supposed to take place in Indianola, but thanks to a rain storm and a lack of an indoor facility in Indianola, the dual took place in Pella at Central's H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse. After the trips made the trip over to Pella, Central took control fast.
"We've got three letters we try to use as often as we can: TCB," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "It means take care of business,' and that's what these guys did. They zoned in and didn't give Simpson any reason to be excited."
The Dutch swept the doubles, including 8-0 victories at No. 2 and No. 3.
Brad DiLeo (freshman, Iowa City, West HS) and
William Isiminger (sophomore, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) played at No. 2 and
Ethan St. John (sophomore, Crystal Lake, Ill., Central HS) and
Josh Phillips (senior, Morton, Ill.) played at No. 3
After taking a week off to rest up, the No. 1 pairing of
David Boschma (sophomore, Olathe, Kan., Northwest HS) and
Danny Anderson (junior, Boone) triumphed 8-5.
"Our No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams looked really, good," Ferrell said. "We haven't had our No. 1 team in a while so it was neat to have them back. They started off a little slow but found their groove.
Securing his team-high 13th win of the year,
Kris Weeden (junior, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) was victorious 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles
"Kris really stuck it to him," Ferrell said. "He had a nice point pattern set up and made his opponent play the way he wanted to."
Rebounding from some injury troubles, Boschma won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
"David beat a nice Simpson player and kind of tore him apart," Ferrell said. "It was really fun to watch."
Isiminger won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and Phillips won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3. DiLeo won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 and St. John won 8-1 in an abbreviated match at No. 6.
Central closes out the regular season with a match at Luther College (13-6, 5-1 conference) at 4 p.m. on Saturday. With a win, Central finishes second in the conference.
"We're looking forward to it," Ferrell said. "It's not the first time we've gone into this match with identical records. We're excited to see if we can get the coveted No. 2 seed in the league tournament."
