Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Tennis match goes against Central men

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Central College men's tennis team was defeated 8-1 on Saturday afternoon by Coe College despite good efforts throughout the lineup.

Ferrell was pleased with the way his Dutch (5-7, 1-1 conference) played against the Kohawks (13-6, 2-0 conference).

"The thing we kept preaching was do what you do best and stick to it," coach Ryun Ferrell said. Don't stray away from it. Don't sit here and try to do something amazing when it's not going to take that to win."

Kris Weeden's (senior, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) win at No. 4 singles was responsible for Central's only tally in the team scores. He was credited with 6-4, 0-6, 1-0 (10-7) triumph over Ben Hediger.

"He was a man on a mission and played his heart out," Schirm said. "He was down 4-1 in the first set and won five straight games. His opponent cleaned up a little bit in the second set but Kris played some really tough tennis in the tiebreaker. The thing he did that was amazing was that he was downright tough and that's what you want."

Ferrell cited David Boschma's (sophomore, Olathe, Kan., Northwest HS) effort in the No. 2 singles slot as well. He lost 7-5, 6-0 to Rami Hemidian.

"He had a really good first set," he said. "He was down 5-0 but came back to lose 7-5. He really found his rhythm and found what he could do."

A double feature of conference matches awaits Central next weekend both Loras College and the University of Dubuque come to town on Saturday. The Dutch will face the Spartans at 9 a.m. and the Duhawks at 3 p.m.

"Loras is an improved team," Ferrell said. "Dubuque has a new coach so there's going to be some transition. We've got to be ready and we will be. We'll train hard this week and it'll be great to have two matches at home this week."
