PELLA — Winning 17 of 18 possible matches on the day, the Central College men's tennis team powered past the University of Dubuque 8-1 and Loras College 9-0 on Saturday.
The wins even Central's overall season record at 7-7, but more importantly makes them 3-1 in league matches.
"We did pretty well today, I was pleased," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "The guys came out and played hard today."
David Boschma (sophomore, Olathe, Kan., Northwest HS) was the only Central player to go 4-0 on the day. At No. 2 singles, he won 6-4, 7-6 against Loras and 6-3, 6-1 against Dubuque. Playing No. 1 doubles with
Danny Anderson (junior, Boone), he won 8-1 against Dubuque and 8-4 against Loras.
"He's been putting in a lot of extra effort," "He's been playing phenomenal tennis. David had a plan today and stuck with that plan and didn't waver."
Ben Turnley (junior, Manhattan, Kan.) held Sincere Davis of Dubuque scoreless in a No. 6 singles match for a 6-0, 6-0 victory. It was his first appearance in the varsity lineup this spring.
"With Ben, you know exactly what you are going to get," "He never waives and it doesn't change. He played tough for us and took care of business."
Between the two matches, the Dutch used 10 different players in the lineup.
"We wanted to make sure we rested a few legs," Ferrell said.
In another pivotal American Rivers Conference match, Central hosts Wartburg College on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
"It's always good to play to them at home," Ferrell said. "There's no love lost between us. It should be a good match. We'll enjoy our day today, but we'll be ready to get back to work on Monday and prepare for the challenge."
