Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

First conference tennis victory for Central men

PELLA — The Central College men's tennis team was disappointed to be forced inside because of weather, but were not disappointed to throttle Nebraska Wesleyan University 8-1 Friday night inside H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse.

Coach Ryun Ferrell was optimistic the match between the Dutch (5-6, 1-0 American Rivers Conference) and the Prairie Wolves (2-9, 0-1 conference) would be played outside but rain moved the dual inside.

"We're a better outdoor team than we are inside," coach Ryun Ferrell said. ". There's no advantage to playing inside against a team like that for us because they have a similar surface to us."

At the top of the singles lineup, William Isiminger (sophomore, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) won 6-1, 6-4 against Gabriel Sellmer. Isiminger and Brad DiLeo (freshman, Iowa City, West HS) also won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles

"Sellmer's got a nice serve and good forehand," Ferrell said. "He was attacking Will pretty early and got him on his heels. Will got his bearings and settled down to win."

The No. 2 and No. 3 singles players for Central, David Boschma (sophomore, Olathe, Kan., Northwest HS) and Josh Phillips (senior, Morton, Ill.) won by identical 6-1, 7-5 margins.

"Those two did something similar to Will," Ferrell said. "They didn't try to shove the tennis ball down their opponents throat, they just played smart and found the weak spot."

Phillips and Ethan St. John (sophomore, Crystal Lake, Ill., Central HS) won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

Kris Weeden (junior, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS), St. John and Tanner Finken (freshman, Carroll, Kuemper Catholic HS) rounded out the win total with victories at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles.

Central travels to Cedar Rapids to face Coe College at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
