PELLA — Following a tough two-game swing through Missouri, the Central College men's tennis team rebounded with a 9-0 victory over Crown College (Minn.) Saturday.
Earlier in the week week, the Dutch (4-6) were beaten 7-0 twice by a pair of NCAA Division II programs. They flipped the script by sweeping the Storm (0-7), a second-year program from St. Bonifacius, Minnesota.
"Crown is a new program and they're still kind of finding their way," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "There's going to be some growing pains for them."
Both of the men's and women's teams from the two schools played inside H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse at the same time. The Dutch women also won 9-0.
"It was fun to play with the two teams side-by-side," Ferrell said.
Senior
Colin Jones (Pella) made an appearance in the singles lineup for the second time this season, securing a 6-0, 6-0 win over Psalms Lee.
Jones also partnered with
Jackson Lewton (senior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) for an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles.
"Colin got it done for us today," Ferrell said. "He played well and did what a senior can do: he got the ball back and played smart."
At the top of the lineup,
William Isiminger (sophomore, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) and
David Boschma (sophomore, Olathe, Kan. Northwest HS) notched 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.
Brad DiLeo (freshman, Iowa City, West HS) and
Tanner Finken (freshman, Carroll, Kuemper Catholic HS) also had 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 4 and No. 5 while
Kris Weeden (junior, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3.
Boschma and
Danny Anderson (senior, Boone) took an 8-0 victory at No. 1 doubles while Isiminger and DiLeo won 8-0 at No. 2 doubles
The Dutch will take off of practice for spring break. The next match for the team is Friday March 29 at home against Nebraska Wesleyan University to start the conference season.
"I think they're ready to go," Ferrell said. "There's still the unknown of what the conference can bring and that will bring us a little extra edge and attitude."
