PELLA—Joyce Schipper, wife of Central College's late College Football Hall of Fame coach Ron Schipper, passed away Sunday morning in Holland, Michigan.
She was 90. Funeral service arrangements are pending.
Central's football field, Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium, was named in their honor in 2006.
The former Joyce Post was a Holland native and a 1951 Hope College (Mich.) graduate. She and her family moved to Pella in 1961 when Ron Schipper was named Central's football coach. He coached for 36 years posted a 287-67-3 record (.808) with 18 Iowa Conference championships and 12 NCAA Division III playoff appearances, winning the 1974 national title and reaching the national finals three times. Earlier this month he was named to a list of the 150 greatest coaches in 150 years of college football released by ESPN.
Joyce briefly served as a kindergarten teacher in Pella before becoming an English as a second language instructor.
Following his retirement in 1996, they returned to Holland. He died in 2006.
She is survived by her three children, Tim and Sara, who live in Holland, and Thom, who lives in Grand Rapids, as well as five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday at Mulder Chapel in Holland from 4-7 p.m. with funeral services Friday at 11 a.m. at Christ Memorial Church. Arrangements are being handled by Dykstra Funeral Home in Holland.
