Box Score PELLA — In the fall regular season finale for the Central College women's tennis team Tuesday night, the Dutch shut out Simpson College 9-0.
Central (5-6, 4-4 American Rivers Conference) has won 13 straight duals against the Storm (3-6, 3-5 conference). Five of those victories have come with a 9-0 score.
"Simpson's a tough team," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "They've had a nicie year and qualified for the league tournament, too."
The Dutch honored their lone senior,
Sami Thompson (Knoxville), as she won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
"She's a great kid and we're going to miss her," Ferrell said. She has the right attitude and we just absolutely love her and we don't want her to go."
Central picked up singles wins from
Katie Larson (sophomore, Fort Madison) at No. 3 (6-0, 6-4),
Laurynn Mize (junior, Sycamore, Ill.) at No. 4 (6-2, 6-0) and
Sarah Schirm (sophomore, Cedar Rapids, Xaiver HS) at No. 5 (6-1, 6-0)
"Katie is figuring it out," Ferrell said. "Laurynn has stepped up nicely and is playing at a nice level. Sarah had a good match."
The only three-set singles match of the day was
Maddie Hartley's (sophomore, Clarinda) 2-6, 7-6, 10-7 win at No. 2
"That's a match she probably loses four weeks ago," Ferrell said. "She leveled out and played smart today."
Hartley and
Bronwyn Metcalf (sophomore, Pella) won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles.
Karleigh Schilling (junior, Swisher, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) and Mize were 8-1 winners at No. 2 and Larson and
Macy Scharff (sophomore, Oskaloosa) triumphed 8-2 at No. 3.
Schilling also won by default at No. 1 singles.
Starting Friday morning, Central will be playing in the American Rivers Conference individual championships. The two-day competition will be held in Waterloo.
