WATERLOO— The Central College women's tennis team was represented in the quarterfinals of all five flights of the American Rivers Conference individual championships Friday
After weather reduced the number of available courts for Friday's action, the Dutch women powered through a 13-hour day of tennis at the conference meet.
"This team fights so hard and plays so tough," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "This league just beats up on each other all day long."
Karleigh Schilling (junior, Swisher, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) picked up a 6-4, 3-6, 14-12 against Wartburg College's Lauren O'Brian before losing in the A-Flight quarterfinals 6-2, 5-7, 10-5 to Luther College's Shelby Cook
"Lauren is a high school teammate of Karleigh," Ferrell said. "They have fun playing each other, but they'd rather play other people. She had chances to pull away against Shelby but couldn't quite do it. It was great to watch her play so well."
In the A-Flight of doubles, Schilling and
Laurynn Mize (junior, Sycamore, Ill.) advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-4 victory over the University of Dubuque's Ashley Quinonez and Hailey Wang. The Central pair lost 8-3 in the quarterfinals to Wartburg's Hannah Fox and Madison Overmann.
"They played tough and did a great job" Ferrell said.
In the B-Flight,
Maddie Hartley (sophomore, Clarinda) was the top seed and advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-4 victory over Rebekah Corson of Wartburg. She lost 8-4 to Kylie Dunning of Luther in the quarterfinals.
Sarah Behrens (junior, Red Oak) was the only Central player to qualify for Saturday's semifinal action with three wins on Friday. She first beat Hope Gray (Luther) 8-7 (8-3) and then defeated Samantha Heins (Dubuque) 8-0). She closed the day with an 8-7 (8-5) victory over Maddie Smith of Loras College.
"She got better match-by-match," Ferrell said. "I was real pleased to see her make it through the day."
Sarah Schirm (sophomore, Cedar Rapids, Xavier HS) and
Alex Griggs (freshman, Knoxville) picked up two wins in the B-Flight doubles, winning 8-2 against Buena Vista University's Nicole Lange and Destiny Einterwold in the opener and defeating Lauren Colon and TaDazja Perkins of Dubuque 8-7 (14-12) in the second round. They were eliminated 8-6 in the quarterfinals against Sara Backus and Lauren Diiulio of Loras College.
"They beat Buena Vista's No. 1 team and almost beat the No. 2 team from Loras," "They were up a break serving but came up just short."
Behrens will play in the C-Flight singles semifinals Saturday morning.
