Early effort banks win for Central women’s soccer squad

WATERTOWN, WIS. — A blazing five-goal start in the first half was punctuated with two more strikes in the second half for a 7-0 Central College women's soccer team victory against Maranatha Baptist University Friday night.

The Dutch (2-1-0) have now scored 15 goals in two games this week and posted the first shutout of the season against the Sabercats (2-2-0). A blistering attack fired off 47 shots while a stifling defense left Maranatha with no shot attempts.

It only took 20 minutes on the pitch for Central to build up a 4-0 lead. Midfielders Lauren Vahlkamp (senior, Quincy, Ill., Notre Dame HS), Olivia Stoops (senior, Morton, Ill.) and Mikaela Erickson (junior, Spring Lake, Mich., Western Michigan Christian HS) all scored unassisted in that time frame. Senior midfielder Olivia Denham (Bondurant, Bondurant-Farrar HS) took an assist from forward Elise Askelsen (junior, Indianola) for her third tally of the season.

"Anytime you can jump on a team early away from home is always good," Kobylinski said.

The final scoring effort of the first half was a Baylee Kivett (junior, midfielder, Grinnell) goal at the 35-minute mark. Erickson was credited with an assist.
Late in the second half, Central got career-first goals from forwards Sophia Sanchez (sophomore, Des Moines, Lincoln HS) and Ceora LeClaire (freshman, Des Moines, Carlisle HS).

"I was really happy for Sophia," Kobylinski said. "She got nicked a little bit in the North Park game and came back to get a nice goal today. Ceora got an opportunity in front of the box and scored it."

"Having seven different goal scorers shows our depth in the attack."

Kobylinsk nearly cleared his entire bench in the contest, using 30 players and three goalkeepers in an effort to stay fresh for tomorrow's game at Wisconsin Lutheran College.

"Anytime we can rotate a lot of player, especially on a back-to-back weekend, we're going to do that," Kobylinski said. "A lot of players ended up playing well."
