Two volleyball wins for Central at North Park tournament

CHICAGO, ILL.—A pair of victories for the Central College volleyball team at the North Park University Invitational Saturday pushed the team's overall record to an even 8-8 (.500).

Against Greenville College, Central won 25-20, 25-27, 25-23, 25-8. In the nightcap, Central beat St. Mary's College (Ind.) 17-25, 25-13, 25-23, 26-24.

"I was happier with how we competed today," coach Jeanne Czipri said. "We were challenged by two very different teams and worked through the momentum battles in both matches."

In the 6-2 offense, right-side hitters Erin Dilger (junior, Tinley Park, Ill., Lincoln-Way North HS) and Melissa Miller (senior, Williamsburg) each had solid days on the attack. Dilger had nine kills in both matches while Miller had 10 against St. Mary's and four against Greenville.

"Mel and Erin are starting to come alive at the other pin," Czipri said.

Setters Chapel Carter (senior, Colorado Springs, Colo., Coronado HS) and Alyssa Lewton (freshman, Ankeny, Centennial HS) had identical amounts of assists in both contests, notching 20 against St. Mary's and 18 against Greenville. Lewton had a double-double with 11 digs against Greenville.

"Both setters played well defensively," Czipri said. "They worked our hitters around to help our offense find some rhythm."

Krissa Larson (freshman, outside hitter, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) had double-digit kills in both games, recording 15 against St. Mary's and 11 against Greenville. Classmate Landry Luhring (outside hitter, Grundy Center) had her sixth double-double of the year with 11 kills and 13 digs against Greenville.

Getting a full week off for the first time this season, the Dutch will play at Grinnell College for a triangular next Saturday. In addition to the Pioneers, Ripon College (Wis.) will also be there.
