INDIANOLA—In the final match before the Iowa Conference tournament starts next weekend, the Central College women's tennis team knocked off Simpson College 6-3 on Thursday.
The Dutch enter the postseason with a 12-3 record and are the No. 3 seed for next weekend's tournament. The Storm end their season at 4-11.
"We looked like a team that hasn't played outside," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "We came out of the blocks pretty quick in doubles, but we lost some discipline in singles. We settled back down and played the way we are capable.
"It was a solid day. Simpson played hard and there is no love lost between us."
The highest-seeded singles winner for the Dutch was
Karleigh Schiling (freshman, Swisher Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) who was victorious 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3. She also partnered with
Kari Grindberg (senior, Fort Dodge) to win 8-4 at No. 1 singles.
"We just let Karleigh go and do her thing and she'll get to work," Ferrell said. "It's not necessarily fancy, but she loves playing. We're lucky to have her."
Madison Krumm (junior, Kellogg, Grinnell HS) stepped in at No. 6 singles for a 6-1, 6-1 win. She played No. 3 doubles with
Ashley Maley (senior, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) and won 8-1.
At No. 4 singles, Central got a 6-2, 6-2 victory from
Jenna Stewart (junior, Burlington, Notre Dame HS).
Laurynn Mize (freshman, Sycamore, Ill.) rounded out the singles wins 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 5 spot.
Central will open the first round of the Iowa Conference tournament against the University of Dubuque on Friday, April 27 in Decorah. In the two team's match-up during the fall season, the Dutch beat the Spartans 7-2.
