Central’s Wood helps deliver baseball split at RussMatt Central Florida Invitational

AUBURNDALE, Fla. — The Central College baseball team continued play at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational Monday with a doubleheader against Gwynedd Mercy University (Pa.), dropping game one 6-5 and winning game two 7-6.

"I saw some good things today and I saw some things that we need to improve on and that's what this trip is about," said coach Matt Schirm. "I thought we did a really good job in the second game with everyone getting involved in the lineup."

Sophomore outfielder Tanner Wood (Pella) went 3-for-4 in the opening game with a homerun, a double and three RBIs. Wood received the start on the bump for the nightcap.

"Tanner had a nice day today," said Schirm. "He was really productive at the plate and really battled on the mound during game two."

Junior outfielder Coy Moore (Hamilton, Twin Cedars HS) had a pair of hits in game one and scored a run.

Sophomore righty Zach Edwards (Des Moines, LincolnHS) threw game one for Central (2-2), finishing five innings, allowing four runs, three earned and striking out a pair.

"Zach had a good outing for us today," said Schirm. "He had a couple of bad breaks but really battled through them and put together a solid showing."

Relieving Wood in game two, freshman Tyler Steward (Norwalk) earned his first career win.

"Tanner (Wood) threw 3.2 innings and then Tyler came in and finished the game," said Schirm. "It was cool to see Tyler get his first win."

The Dutch continue invitational play Tuesday with a game against Saint Vincent University (Pa.) with first pitch at 9 a.m. Eastern Time.

Official stats were not available for game two.
