Dutch men in third in season-opening track meet

PELLA — After wrapping up the second day of action at the Central Invitational Friday, the Central College men's outdoor track and field team garnered a third-place finish.

Northwestern College was the team champion with 183.5 points, while Central had 100.

Just a hair off his career-best time, Hunter Pollpeter (senior, Fort Madison) completed the 110-meter hurdles in 15.29 seconds to earn the bronze.

"He's coming off the best indoor season of his career," Dunham said. "For him to build off that and to have some success this weekend is a great thing."

Coming off an injury-hampered indoor season, triple jumper Jordon Woods (sophomore, Orland Park, Ill., Carl Sandburg HS) looked strong in his initial outdoor appearance, placing third with a leap of 39 feet, 11.5 inches.

"I couldn't be happier for Jordan to finally get out there and compete," Dunham said. "I know it was an extremely frustrating indoor season and it probably felt really good for him to get out there."

Seven Dutch runners piled up 29 points in the 3,000-meter run by finishing second through eighth. Runner-up Jordan Toomey (Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) led the contingent in 9:08.85. In order, Kyle Pape (junior, Wahlert Catholic HS), Preston Kizer (sophomore, Dubuque) and Taylor Donner (senior, Dubuque), Jerry Lotz (freshman, Yokosuka, Japan, Nile C. Kinnick HS), Parker Hill (junior, Bettendorf) and Jon Specht (senior, Dubuque, Hemsptead HS) filled the last scoring spots.

Distance races also added two other scorers as Mark Fairley (senior, Dubuque) was third in the 800-meter run (1:56.05) and Austin Pfiffner (sophomore, Dubuque, Hemptead HS) was fifth in the 10,000-meter run (36:23.49)

The 4x400-meter relay team of Tre Wilridge (freshman, Sierra Vista, Ariz. Tombstone HS), Preston Kizer (sophomore, Dubuque), Justin Wimbish (senior, Glendale, Ariz., Apollo HS) and Kyle Pape (junior, Wahlert Catholic HS) was the fastest of five Central foursomes, taking seventh in 3:32.94. Wilridge was seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (1:00.30).

The Dutch will return to action at the Cornell College Invitational in Mount Vernon, Iowa next weekend.
