Multi-eventers open A-R-C track and field championships

Smith leading men's decathlon

PELLA — Two members of the Central College men's track and field team are leading the way halfway through the decathlon at the American Rivers Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday.

Gavin Smith (senior, Audubon) is in first with 3,487 points. He had the best long jump (22 feet, 2.5 inches), shot put (40-4.75) and 400-meter run (51.64 seconds) in the field.

Landon Pote (freshman, Ankeny) trails Smith by 158 points with 3,329 points. He had the best high jump (6-2.75) Thursday.
In the women's heptathlon, Sage Austin is in seventh place with 2,390 points. She had the third-best high jump in a deep field of 16 athletes

Also competing in the heptathlon, Shayla Greeley (freshman, Riceville) is 12th (2,189 points) and Kinsey Drake (freshman, Wilton) is 14th (2,137 points).

Friday's action at the league championships starts at 10 a.m. at the Ron and Joye Schipper Stadium.
