BROOKINGS, S.D. — The school record for the 4x800-meter relay wasn't just broken Friday night at the South Dakota State Indoor Classic, the Central College men's track and field quartet smashed it by nine seconds.
A foursome of Dubuque natives in
Preston Kizer (sophomore, Dubuque), Kyle Pape (junior, Wahlert Catholic HS), Jon Specht (senior, Hempstead HS) and
Mark Fairley (senior, Dubuque). Finished in 7 minutes, 48.50 seconds to finish second. The record was previously set in 2013 at 7:57.59.
"They had a goal when they toed the line tonight," assistant coach Jon Graupmann said. "They had a magnificent effort. Every leg ran very hard and their energy was very good."
Kizer led off with a blistering split of 1:56.9.
"Preston really set the tone," Graupmann said. "The other guys followed suit."
Specht,
Blake Morgan (senior, Story City, Roland-Story HS), Pape and Fairley ran a 10:13.28 in the distance medley relay to place third.
It was a near miss for
Mitchell Yaw (junior, Orange City, MOC-Floyd Valley HS) in making the program's top-10 list in the 600-meter run. His time (1:25.55) was just over a second away from making that list as he placed 31st of 54 runners.
"That was a good PR for him," Graupmann said.
Senior
Hunter Howe (La Plata, Mo.) led the Dutch sprinters in both the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash. He finished 46th in the 60 (7.31 seconds) and 66th in the 200 (23.01 seconds).
Cory Suedmeier (sophomore, Ankeny Centennial HS) also ran well in those events according to Graupmann. He was 62nd in the 60 (7.38 seconds) and 109th in the 200 (23.63 seconds).
"Cory was two-for-two on PR's today," Graupmann said. "He competed well from the moment the gun went off. He had a very nice day."
Morgan also ran the 200 meters in 23.33 seconds to place 89 th, but a tough lane assignment may have hurt his time.
"Blake got stuck in lane one of the first heat," Graupmann said. "He ran really well against those guys but he was up against a tough challenge."
