Pape, distance crew lead Dutch on final day in South Dakota

BROOKINGS, S.D. — The career-best marks were falling again on Saturday for the Central College men's track and field team at the South Dakota State Indoor Classic.

The Dutch scored three points in Friday night's 4x800-meter relay race and placed 16th in the team standings.

Kyle Pape (junior, Dubuque, Wahlert Catholic HS) joined Central's indoor top-10 list in the 800-meter run after he finished 27th in 1:56.07. He also completed the mile in 4:25.23 (35th place)

"Kyle had a good weekend," assistant coach Jon Graupmann said. "He ran hard in the mile on tired legs and still almost got a PR."

Preston Kizer (sophomore, Dubuque), Tanner Rathje (senior, Marion, Linn-Mar HS) and Taylor Donner (junior, Dubuque) also ran career-best times in the 800.

Already possessing one of the top-50 mile times in the country, Mark Fairley (senior, Dubuque) made a small improvement and dropped his career-best time to 4:16.42 and placed eighth.

"Mark's mile was very impressive in the sense that he ran from the gun," "He ran with some great talent in that heat and competed hard. He's setting himself up well for the rest of the year."

The lone entrant in the 5,000-meter run for Central, junior Jordan Toomey (Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) dropped 32 seconds off his career-best time, finishing 32nd in 15:48.76.

"The distance guys all ran really hard, even on tired legs." Graupmann said.

The 4x400-meter relay unit of Mitchell Yaw (junior, Orange City, MOC-Floyd Valley HS), Blake Morgan (senior, Story City, Roland-Story HS), Cory Suedmeier (sophomore, Ankeny Centennial HS) and Hunter Howe (senior, La Plata, Mo.) finished in 3:24.80, taking 17th.

Running the 400 meters, Yaw (51.24 seconds), Morgan (51.83) and Suedmeier (52.72 seconds) all recorded new personal-bests. It was the third new best for Suedmeier on the weekend.

"Cory went 3-for-3 on the weekend on indoor PR's," Graupmann said. "He's making a lot of mental progression as far as developing confidence."

Next weekend, the Dutch track squads will be split between the Nebraska Tune-up on Friday and the Wartburg Invitational on Saturday.
