Offensive struggles doom Dutch women’s basketball squad

PELLA — Wednesday night was a cold-shooting night for the Central College women's basketball team in a 75-45 home loss to Iowa Conference foe Loras College.

Central (7-13, 2-9 conference) shot just 26.8 percent from the field, while Loras (13-8, 5-7 conference) shot 42.1.

"Tonight was tough for us offensively," said coach Joe Steinkamp. "We got good shots but we couldn't get anything to fall."

Central senior forward Jackie Kriegel (Marengo, Iowa Valley HS) collected her seventh statistical double-double of the season with 12 points and 16 rebounds, including six offensive boards.

"Jackie did a great job again tonight battling on the glass," said Steinkamp. "She is averaging a double-double in conference play and when she's out of the game it's hard for us to rebound."

Sophomore forward Kendall Brown (Moravia) had 12 points and four blocks.

"We wanted to get more post touches than our last game," said Steinkamp. "Kendall was able to finish some of her post feeds and she did a great job defending."

Central was outrebounded 43-36 but had a 12-11 advantage on the offensive glass.

A trip to Dubuque awaits the Dutch Saturday for a matchup with the University of Dubuque for a women's-men's doubleheader with the women beginning at 2 p.m. Central won the opening matchup 73-55 December 2 in Pella. The Dutch have won three consecutive games against the Spartans.

"We're looking forward to getting back on the court," said Steinkamp. "We have to make shots but we've played well against them in the past and hopefully we see another strong performance Saturday."
