Central falls at home to Simpson in women’s basketball tilt

PELLA — Central College senior forward Jackie Kriegel (Marengo, Iowa Valley HS) recorded her fourth statistical double-double this season in an 89-74 loss to Simpson College Wednesday night.

Kriegel led the Dutch with 14 points and corralled 10 rebounds.

"Jackie did a great job battling tonight," said coach Joe Steinkamp. "She did a nice job finishing around the basket and brought great energy."

Central's record drops to 7-10 overall and 2-6 in Iowa Conference play while Simpson improved to 11-6 overall and 5-3 in league play.

Senior guard Jessica Helton (Nevada) had 12 points in 24 minutes after battling foul trouble.

The Dutch received a spark off the bench from freshman guard Star Smith (Pittsburg, Texas). Smith had six points and dished out four assists in 13 minutes.

"We knew heading into the game that we'd use Star more because she is good against the pressure," said Steinkamp. "She did a nice job providing some offense for us when Jess went out with her foul situation."

The Storm won the shooting battle, hitting 47.2 percent from the field compared to the Dutch 43.5. Central won the battle on the glass 43-39.

"We knew heading into the game it was going to be tough to rebound but we showed a ton of energy and did a nice job on the boards," said Steinkamp.

Central heads to Cedar Rapids Saturday for a women's-men's doubleheader against Coe College with the women beginning at 2 p.m. Coe defeated the Dutch 69-53 just four days ago in Pella.

"With it being a three-game week, we will take Thursday off and then prepare for Coe Friday," said Steinkamp. "We have a few changes we'll make from the last week's scouting report."
