Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Helton, Kriegel combine for 25 points in Central women’s basketball defeat

CEDAR RAPIDS — Central College seniors Jessica Helton (guard, Nevada) and Jackie Kriegel (forward, Marengo, Iowa Valley HS) combined for 25 points in a 70-53 loss to Coe College Saturday afternoon in Cedar Rapids.

Kriegel had her third consecutive and fifth statistical double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Helton finished with 13 points and grabbed five rebounds.

"Jackie continued her streak of double-doubles and did a nice job defensively," said coach Joe Steinkamp. "It was a good all-around game from her."

The loss drops Central to 7-11 overall and 2-7 in Iowa Conference play. The Dutch were outshot 49.2 percent to 35.7 and outrebounded 39-29.

"I thought Coe did a great job defending tonight," said Steinkamp. "They really took advantage of some of our bad possessions in the second quarter and hurt us with a bunch of threes in a short span."

"We started the third quarter really well and tied the game," said Steinkamp after his team trailed 42-28 at the half.

Central's leading scorer senior guard Emily Dine (Oldsmar, Fla., East Lake HS) scored four points, 10 fewer than her season average.

Junior guard Kristin Hubert (Moville, Woodbury Central HS) had eight points, including two 3-pointers off the bench.

"We have to continue to get better and strive to play good basketball for 40 minutes," said Steinkamp.

After playing its fourth game in seven days, Central returns to P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium Saturday with a women's-men's doubleheader against Buena Vista University with the women beginning at 2 p.m. The Beavers won the first matchup this season 91-76 in Storm Lake January 6.
