Two more conference tennis wins for Dutch women

PELLA—The Central College women's tennis team maintained its dominance at home Saturday with a pair of wins in Iowa Conference play over Nebraska Wesleyan University and Buena Vista University.

The Dutch (7-1, 5-1 IIAC) beat the Prairie Wolves 9-0 and the Beavers 8-1. Central is unbeaten in five matches at home this year.

"It was a good day overall," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "We played well as a team."

Unbeaten in all six doubles matches, the Dutch used four different combinations to get there. At the top, Kari Grindberg (senior, Fort Dodge) and Karleigh Schilling (freshman, Swisher, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) won 8-3 against Nebraska Wesleyan and 8-2 against Buena Vista. Paige Vannausdle (senior, Red Oak) and EmmaGrace Walter (junior, Johnston) won 8-1 in both contests.

In singles play against Buena Vista, Central was able to get a few new faces in the lineup. Kirsten Jordan (junior, Clear Lake) won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 singles and Madison Krumm (sophomore, Kellogg, Grinnell HS) came out on top 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5. Cassidy Bos (junior, Geneseo, Ill.) was defeated 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6

"It was good to get those three out there and playing," Ferrell said. "They need to play."

Ashley Maley (senior, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) triumphed 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles against the Beavers and added a 6-3, 6-3 win against Buena Vista.

Another home doubleheader for Central is schedule for Saturday, October 7. The Dutch will take on the league-leading Luther College Norse as well as the Wartburg College Knights. The first match will be at 9 a.m. against Wartburg with the Luther contest to follow at 3 p.m.

"We can't jump too far ahead," Ferrell said. "We've got to take care of business against Wartburg. It's always a battle between the two of us, no matter the level we are playing at."
