CEDAR RAPIDS—On a quest to knock of perennial Iowa Conference favorites Coe College, the Central College women's tennis team came up one point short on Saturday morning.
It's the first loss of the season for the Dutch (4-1, 2-1 IIAC) and first league win for the Kohawks (2-2, 1-0 IIAC).
"We battled and played as hard as we could," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "For us to win that match today, we needed to win one more doubles match."
|Central got its only doubles win from the No. 3 tandem
of Jenna Stewart (junior, Burlington, Notre Dame HS) and
Karleigh Schilling (freshman, Swisher, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS), who whitewashed their opponents 8-0.
Schilling also was impressive in her No. 4 singles match according to Ferrell as she won 6-1, 6-0 against Lakyn Boltz.
"Karleigh has done a great job," Ferrell said. "She's playing well and it's been a nice surprise. I can't complain about her performance at all."
Stewart and
Paige Vannausdle (senior, Red Oak) were responsible for the other two singles wins. Stewart won 7-6 (5), 6-1 at No. 6 and Vannausdle won 6-3, 7-5 (5) at No. 5.
"Jenna did a good job," Ferrell said. "She makes it very physical and very fast. If you're going to beat her, you're going to have to outlast her."
The next dual match for the Dutch isn't until September 26 at home against Simpson as the team will send its top players to the USTA/ITA Division III Midwest Regional in St. Peter, Minnesota next weekend.
"We know we've got stuff to work on and we know where we can get better," Ferrell said.
