PELLA — Playing a non-conference match against an Iowa Conference rival, the Central College women's team whitewashed Simpson College 9-0 Saturday afternoon.
The contest against the Storm (5-10-1) was considered non-conference for the Dutch (10-6) since the official conference matchup took place in September. Central evened its spring record at 3-3.
Central had its widest margins of victory at the top of its singles lineups.
Ashley Maley (junior, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) took a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 and
EmmaGrace Walter (sophomore, Johnston) won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.
"Ashley's been doing some extra work and it's really paying off," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "She's starting to embrace the No. 1 role and is doing a great job with it.
"EmmaGrace is a growing into a nice player. Sometimes you've got to remind yourself she's only a sophomore, she's such a mature person with a good head on her shoulders. I couldn't be more pleased with work that she's doing."
Walter and Maley played No. 1 doubles together and won decisively 8-3.
Ferrell cited all of his doubles pairings for their improved play as well.
Kari Grindberg (junior, Fort Dodge) and
Paige Vannausdle (junior, Red Oak) won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.
Jenna Stewart (sophomore, Burlington, Notre Dame HS) and
Madison Krumm (freshman, Grinnell) were victorious by the same margin at No. 3 doubles.
Central is off next week and has two more regular season matches the following week before taking on Wartburg College April 28 in the quarterfinals of the Iowa Conference tournament.
"We're sitting in a pretty good spot," Ferrell said. "We've got a few more matches, but we're really starting to get ourselves ready for Wartburg."
