Tennis season comes to a close for Dutch women

WINONA, MINN. — Friday's marathon match came back to haunt the Central College women's tennis team in Saturday's Iowa Conference tournament semifinals, as the Dutch fell 5-0 against Luther College.

The Dutch end their season with an 11-8 record, while the Norse advanced to the league title match.

"We looked like a team that had a 12-hour day yesterday," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "We competed hard, but it was too much of a hill to overcome. To beat Luther we need to be at our best, which is hard to do on tired legs."

The No. 2 doubles team of Paige Vannausdle (junior, Red Oak) and Kari Grindberg (junior, Fort Dodge) were the narrowest of doubles defeats, falling 8-2.

Vannausdle was one of two singles matches played to completion, dropping a 6-0, 6-2 decision at No. 3 singles. EmmaGrace Walter (sophomore, Johnston) was defeated 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. The other four matches were either unfinished or did not start.

Central's spring season roster will remain intact for next fall, as the entire 12-player roster is slated to return in the fall.

???????"What you see is what you get," Ferrell said. "It's really exciting to have everyone coming back. We've also some really good players coming in. We've got a chance to do something special next year."
