LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Derby City Classic host Spalding University proved to be a tough test for the Central College baseball team Saturday, defeating the Dutch 13-5.
Central (1-1) held an early 4-2 lead before the Golden Eagles (7-1) rattled off 11 runs over the final seven innings. The Dutch added a lone run in the top of the ninth inning.
"The biggest difference between yesterday and today was the number of free bases we gave up," said coach
Matt Schirm. "When you give up that many free bags, you leave yourself open to giving up big innings."
The Dutch pitchers combined for 11 walks.
Senior second baseman
Noah Stochl (New Hampton) continued his strong start going 2-for-4 with an RBI, Stochl went 4-for-5 Friday in Friday night's win over Anderson University (Ind.). Sophomore shortstop
Garrett Saunders (Bonaparte, Van Buren HS) went 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs, senior catcher
Michael Reuter (Monticello) had an RBI single in five at-bats and senior center fielder
Jacob Hirst (Davenport, Assumption HS) reached base three times, including a single and two walks, and stole his first bag of the season.
Freshman pitcher
Nicholas Long (Marshalltown, East Marshall HS) started the game and pitched three innings and gave up four runs on eight hits and walked three batters while striking out one. Freshman hurler
Robert Stanton (Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) received the loss after throwing three innings and giving up three runs, two earned, on one hit and five walks while striking out four Spalding batters.
"We wanted to get those two freshmen some experience on the mound today," said Schirm. "We think they have bright futures for us going forward and getting their first college outings out of the way will help them. I'm sure they are a little disappointed with the outcome but they'll bounce back."
Junior starter
Adam Carey (Pella) will toe the rubber for Central in the final game of the classic against Kalamazoo University (Mich.) at 11 a.m. Sunday.
"Adam has worked extremely hard over the offseason and has earned the start tomorrow," said Schirm. "He might be our most improved player from a year ago."
