AUBURNDALE, Fla. — Underclassmen
Garrett Saunders (sophomore, Bonaparte, Van Buren HS) and
Zach Edwards (freshman, Des Moines, Lincoln HS) helped the Central College baseball team end a five-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory in game two of a doubleheader with Cornell College after falling 6-1 in the opening game Monday morning.
Central (2-6) fell behind Cornell (2-4) 2-0 after the first inning before Saunders hit a game-tying two-run homerun in the third inning and later added the go-ahead run off a double from senior second baseman
Noah Stochl (New Hampton).
"Garrett had a big homerun for us," said coach
Matt Schirm. "The homerun changed the momentum after we fell behind early."
A one-run lead was all the freshman righty needed.
Edwards earned his first-career win after throwing 6.2 innings, surrendering nine hits, giving up two runs, no earned and striking out five batters.
"We had a really good pitching performance from Zach," said Schirm. "He was the catalyst for us today."
The Dutch added an insurance run in the fifth inning and freshman
Tanner Wood (Pella) earned a one-out save, striking out the only batter he faced.
Central dropped the first game of the day but junior pitcher
Adam Carey (Pella) threw 5.2 innings, giving up three earned run, surrendering four hits and struck out four Cornell hitters.
The Dutch continue play in the RussMatt Invitational Thursday against Knox College (Ill.) at 10 a.m. Knox leads the all-time series against Central 4-2, however Central won the last meeting 16-1 in seven innings March 14, 2012.
