Seniors send Central women to soccer victory

PELLA— In a 5-0 senior day victory over Cornell College, the seniors on the Central College women's soccer team stole the show Saturday afternoon.

It wasn't just the seniors who got to play in the win for the Dutch (10-2), as a total of 29 players participated in the win over the Rams (2-11).

"It's always good to see some fresh bodies do some different things in a game situation," coach Mike Kobylinski said. "Overall, I thought we played okay today."

Senior midfielder Kallie Holte (Kirksville, Mo.) tallied her seventh and eighth goals of the season, including a first period penalty kick. Fellow senior midfielder Felicia Roppe (Council Bluffs, St. Albert HS) assisted on the score.

"When Kallie gets around the goal, good things happen," Kobylinski said. "I think for her to bag a few goals on senior day was awesome."

Getting her first career start in goal was senior Sadie Jones (Creston). Classmate Amanda Rodriguez (senior, Grimes, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) got her first ever start at outside midfielder.

"I couldn't be happier for Sadie and Amanda," Kobylinski said. "It's fantastic to see them get a lot of game time. They played well"

In addition to Holte, Roppe, Jones and Rodriguez, seniors Kayla Dowell (Cedar Falls) and Jackie Sunderman (Pella) started at defender while Kalee Findlay (senior, Grimes, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) started at midfielder. Defender Rachel Verhun (senior, Ann Arbor, Mich., Pioneer HS) sat out with injury.

Junior midfielders Lauren Vahlkamp (Quincy, Ill., Notre Dame HS), Olivia Denham (Bondurant, Bondurant-Farrar HS) and sophomore forward Erin Manion (Delafield, Wis., Kettle Moraine HS) had the other scores for the Dutch. Manion assisted Vahlkamp while forward Elise Askelsen (sophomore, Indianola) put a cross into Denham for her goal. Denham was credited with the assist on Manion's goal.

"When we get goals from Holte, Manion, Vahlkamp and Denham, good things happen for Central women's soccer," Kobylinski said.

A quick turnaround awaits the Dutch as they head to Beloit, Wisconsin for a 3 p.m. match against the Buccaneers of Beloit College.
