BELOIT, WIS.— Three goals in a 13-minute span in the second half helped the Central College women's soccer team overcome a halftime deficit in a 3-1 victory over Beloit College Sunday.
With the win, Central is now 11-2 overall on the season while the Buccaneers are 3-9.
The Dutch were unable to score in the first half and trailed 1-0 after Beloit found the back of the net in the 23rd minute. A change of direction and a conversation at the break turned the tides.
"It made a difference playing with the wind in the second half," coach
Mike Kobylinski said. "I think we also had a great team talk starting with our assistants (Goodman and Roxworthy) and it finished with me. Our women executed the plan well."
It only took five minutes into the second half for Central to light up the scoreboard when midfielder
Lauren Vahlkamp (junior, Quincy, Ill., Notre Dame HS) beat the keeper from close range. Keeping the pressure up, she added a second goal 77 seconds later.
"We had a chat after the Coe game how about she can do those things," Kobylinski said. "She was a difference-maker for us today. I was very pleased with her."
Midfielder
Kallie Holte (senior, Kirksville, Mo.) contributed with assists on both of Vahlkamp's tallies.
"Kallie's playing with ferocity right now," Kobylinski said.
The game's final goal was scored 11 minutes later by forward
Elise Askelsen (sophomore, Indianola), her fifth of the season.
"Elise brought tremendous energy," Kobylinski said.
Kobylinski also cited the defensive effort of
Rachel Verhun (senior, Ann Arbor, Mich., Pioneer HS) and
Lauryn Kramer (junior, Cedar Falls) in limiting Beloit's top scoring threat.
The gauntlet of the Iowa Conference schedule continues with a home contest against the University of Dubuque Tuesday at 3 p.m.
"We're confident and hungry," Kobylinski said. "It's going to be a physical match between two Iowa Conference teams."
