PELLA — Records are meant to be broken and on Wednesday night Central College senior forward
Colby Taylor (Creston) broke the school record for career points in a 82-67 win over Luther College.
Entering the game, Taylor needed 27 points to break Jeff Verhoef's 37-year record of 1,575 points. Taylor finished with 30 points and seven rebounds in his record-breaking performance.
"Colby is a special player," said coach
Craig Douma. "I know the alumni are very proud of him for his accomplishment tonight. He is just a tough player to guard. Colby can score both inside and outside."
It wasn't an easy 30 points for Taylor. He scored just five points in the first half but exploded for 25 second-half points to obtain the career mark.

Kyle Smith (Ionia, New Hampton HS) found his shooting stroke adding 22 points off 8-of-14 shooting. Smith struggled scoring at the JustAGame Classic finishing the tournament 3-for-22 shooting, well below his 40.5% season average.

Malik Wildermuth (Normal, Ill., University HS) added 16 points and five rebounds and senior center
Ryan Kunkel (Solon) added six points and corralled nine rebounds.
"Malik played great for us tonight," said Douma. "He brought great energy to the floor and was a huge spark for us in the first half. He came in and really got us going tonight."
Central (8-4 overall, 2-1 in conference) won the rebound battle 40-33 and outshot the Norse 47.6% to 39.3%. Luther (2-9 overall, 0-4 in conference) has lost six of its last seven games.
The Dutch continue Iowa Conference play Saturday traveling to Storm Lake for a women's-men's doubleheader against Buena Vista with the men's contest to tip at 4 p.m. Buena Vista (6-6 overall, 2-1 in conference) heads into the contest having lost three in a row. The Beavers defeated the Dutch twice last season.
