STORM LAKE — Central College senior forward
Colby Taylor (Creston) continued his strong senior campaign with 29 points and five rebounds but the Dutch men's basketball team could not overcome Buena Vista 94-87 Saturday afternoon.
Central (8-5 overall, 2-2 Iowa Conference) held a 47-41 lead at halftime but gave up 53 points in the second half. Buena Vista (7-6 overall, 3-1 Iowa Conference) controlled the rebound battle with 36-21. The Beavers outshot Central 56.9% to 49.2% from the field. Both teams connected on 14 3-pointers.
"I really thought the difference in the game tonight was rebounding," said coach
Craig Douma. "Buena Vista shot extremely well and when they missed they were able to get second-chance opportunities."
Junior forward
Kyle Smith (Ionia, New Hampton HS) had 20 points and senior forward
Austin Glawe (Aurelia, Sioux Central HS) added 12 points off the bench.
"We are going to need to find some more guys that can step up and score for us because we can't rely on Colby and Kyle to do all the scoring," said Douma. "I thought
Andre Johnson (Houston, Texas, Alief Hastings HS) and
Nick Drucker (Grimes, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) gave us great minutes off the bench tonight. They brought a lot of energy to the floor and did some really good things for us."
Central continues league play Wednesday when it hosts Loras College for a women's-men's doubleheader with the men tipping off at 8 p.m. at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. The Duhawks are 10-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play coming off a 73-65 home victory over Simpson College Saturday. Central defeated Loras three times last season including a conference tournament win.
"Loras is probably the hottest team in the league right now," said Douma. "We are going to have to really take care of the ball on Wednesday."
