POTSDAM, N.Y. — The Central College volleyball team rebounded from its morning loss, to earn a split on day two of the North Country Season Opener Saturday.
Central (1-3) couldn't put away SUNY-Brockport and in a 19-25, 19-25, 25-15, 25-14, 15-9 morning setback.
Setter Chapel Carter (sophomore, Colorado Springs (Colo.), Coronado HS) engineered the Dutch offense with 32 assists. Junior outside hitter Kylie Gerstein (Iowa Falls, Iowa Falls-Alden HS) was the team leader with 13 kills.
Libero Nicole Ewoldt (senior, Hull, Boyden-Hull HS) steadied the defense with a season-high 32 digs.
"Brockport was the most talented team we faced this weekend, and to get out to a 2-0 set lead was great," said coach Kent Clayberg. "We let a couple mistakes begin to snowball and we weren't able to recover."
The Dutch rebounded with a come-from-behind win over SUNY-Oneonta (18-25, 25-27, 25-10, 25-23, 18-16).
"We came out flat to begin with, but after the second set we just caught fire," Clayberg said.
Junior middle hitter Jenna Dille (Carlisle) spearheaded the Dutch attack with 19 kills on 40 attempts. Ewoldt continued her prolific defensive day with 30 digs.
"Jenna was outstanding this afternoon," Clayberg said. "She had an all-around great performance. And Nicole is really starting to become more comfortable in her role."
Clayberg is encouraged by the play his team put forth this weekend.
"From yesterday through today's games, I can see the improvement," he said. "We are taking steps forward each day to competing at the level we expect."
Central will resume action Friday, returning to the two-day St.Catherine (Minn.) Invitational in St. Paul, Minn. The Dutch open with St. Mary's (Minn.) at 6 p.m. followed by Hamline (Minn.) at 8 p.m.
