POTSDAM, N.Y. — The Central College volleyball team showed early promise tonight winning their opening set of the year, but fell in the North Country Season Opener double header.
Central (0-2) used a strong opening set (15-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-17) to open up a lead over Roger Williams University (R.I.) in its opening match of the night, however the Dutch would relinquish their lead losing the next three sets.
"We started out extremely strong tonight," said coach Kent Clayberg. "The athletes warmed up strong and had a great energy about them."
Ball control became an issue as the night grew on for the Dutch.
"After the first set, our ball control fell apart. With that our confidence dropped as well," said Clayberg.
Outside hitter Kylie Gerstein (junior, Iowa Falls, Iowa Falls-Alden HS) led Central with 10 kills for the four-set match.
In the nightcap, the Dutch dropped all three sets to Clarkson University (N.Y.) 25-21, 25-17, 25-12.
Ball control was again an issue for the Dutch.
"Tonight's result was a continuation from our first match of the day," said Clayberg. "The ball control was not strong and that caused us to not get into a rhythm."
Libero Nicole Ewoldt (senior, Hull, Boyden-Hull HS) paced the Dutch with 28 digs on the evening, collecting 14 in each contest.
Coach Clayberg saw some reasons for optimism going forward on the year.
"We had our moments today, where we showed flashes of the way we want to play this year," said Clayberg. "Our next step is taking those flashes and making them last for a full game"
The Dutch return to action tomorrow with day two of the North Country Season Opener facing off against SUNY-Brockport at 10 a.m. and SUNY-Oneonta at 1:30 p.m.
