Spot secured in league tennis tourney for Central women

PELLA — With two home wins in Iowa Conference play over Buena Vista University and Nebraska Wesleyan University by identical 8-1 margins, the Central College women's tennis team guaranteed itself a spot in the conference team tournament.

Though the tournament is not held until the spring semester and half of the conference slate of matches remains, the Dutch (5-1, 3-1 IIAC) were able to lock one of six spots down with the dual victories.

"We had a solid day today," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "It's huge to get that check mark taken care of already. It's something that I always want us to strive towards."

At No. 5 singles, sophomore Kirsten Jordan (Clear Lake) was dominant in a pair of victories, ousting Madison Gierstorf of Buena Vista 6-2, 6-0 and Victoria Van De Veer of Nebraska Wesleyan 6-1, 6-0.

"She has stepped up in amazing fashion," Ferrell said. "I'm so proud of her. She's smart about the game and plays with heart. She had a great day today."

Ferrell also cited the No. 2 doubles pairing of Paige Vannausdle (junior, Red Oak ) and Jenna Stewart (sophomore, Burlington, Iowa, Notre Dame HS) who won by 8-1 and 8-0 margins in their two matches.

"They stuck to the basics and took care of business." Ferrell said. "They can both makes their serves and make their returns. They may never make you say 'wow,' but they are really good at keeping the game simple."

Vannausdle was also dominant in her singles' matches, winning 6-0 in three of her four sets.

Central heads to St. Peter, Minnesota next weekend to take part in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Regional tournament on September 23 and 24.
