ST. BONIFACIUS, MINN. — Six different Central College men's soccer players scored in a 6-1 throttling of Crown College (Minn.) Saturday.
Coming off a seven-goal performance Wednesday where only three players found the back of the net, a much more balanced offensive attack for the Dutch (3-1-0) was displayed as every goal was scored by a different player.
"Anytime you can get that kind of distribution it's a good thing," coach Garry Laidlaw said. "I though all six of the goals were all very well taken."
Kiel Pederson (sophomore, Arlington Heights, Ill., John Hersey HS) and Ian Meentemeyer (freshman, Hartsburg, Mo., Southern Boone County HS)started the scoring with first-half goals. The other four goals came in the second half after Laidlaw challenged his team to increase its intensity level.
"In the first half, I wasn't completely satisfied with our level of competitiveness," he said. "I felt we needed to match their competiveness and I think we did that in the second half.
Salvador Vilanueva's (junior, Morris, Ill.) free kick goal started the second-half scoring and Bryce Leonard (junior, Williamsville, Ill.) and Miguel Pina (sophomore, Chicago, Ill., Taft HS)followed soon after.
Logan Hoefer (sophomore, Belleve, Neb., East HS) capped off the scoring, using an assist from Aroni Niyikiza (sophomore, Cedar Rapids, Washington HS) to do so.
"Logan's been training really well the last couple of days," Laidlaw said. "His goal was somewhat a result of the hard work he's been putting in on the pitch."
Laidlaw was complimentary of Crown's performance against his team.
"I was impressed with the effort and competitiveness that Crown brought to the game today," Laidlaw said. "I really respect their effort"
The Dutch are back on the pitch in Minnesota tomorrow for a 5 p.m. match against Bethany Lutheran College in St. Bonifacius. The match was previously moved from Mankato due to heavy rainfall in the last week.
