Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Another high-scoring match for Central men’s soccer squad

ST. BONIFACIUS, MINN. — For the second time this week, a pair of Central College men's soccer players recorded hat tricks in a dominant 8-0 victory against Bethany Lutheran College on Sunday.

The Dutch (4-1-0) unleashed offensive fireworks on the Vikings (0-5-0) all game long. Aside from the dual hat tricks, Central also broke the school record with 23 shots on goal in the game.

Salvador Vilanueva (junior, Morris, Ill.)was the first player to solidify the hat trick, scoring twice in the first half and finishing it off early in the second half.

"Sal has been really close on a number of occasions this year," coach Garry Laidlaw said. "It was only a matter of time before he broke out. Today, he definitely found his range around the goal."

Seth Signs (junior, Grinnell) scored the first goal of his collegiate career 71 minutes into the match. He then struck two more times to record the hat trick.

"We just gave him a little bit more freedom to go forward in the second half," Laidlaw said. "He's one of the fittest guys on the team and his work rate is tremendous."

Laidlaw also mentioned the offensive performance of sophomore Aroni Niyikiza (Cedar Rapids, Washington HS) who had a goal and an assist.

"It was nice to see Aroni chip in with a goal," he said. "He's been playing well ever since preseason started. He took his finish well."

Defensively, the Dutch suffocated the Vikings, holding them without a shot and recording the shutout. It is the first time Central has held an opponent without a shot attempt in a match in program history.

"It was a point of emphasis for us," Laidlaw said. "We were disappointed by the way we conceded a couple of cheap, late goals in the previous two games. We made a point of trying to keep a clean sheet today."

Central returns home for a 3 p.m. match against Westminster College (Mo.) on Wednesday.
