Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Turnovers doom Central men’s basketball team against Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS — Turnovers and missed shots were the story of the game.

The previously unbeaten Central College men's basketball team was defeated by Coe College 75-56 in the Iowa Conference opener for both clubs Wednesday. Coe (3-2 overall, 0-1 Iowa Conference) forced 14 Dutch turnovers and capitalized on those turnovers for 17 points, while committing only three turnovers of its own.

"We had 10 turnovers in the first half and we felt like if we could have taken care of the ball, we could've had a chance to take the lead into halftime," said coach Craig Douma. "Coe played really well tonight and dictated the game. They had a simple game plan and executed it well."

Central (4-1 overall, 0-1 conference) got 11 points and 10 rebounds from senior forward Colby Taylor (Creston), his third statistical double-double this season. Taylor now has 27 career double-doubles. But he was held well below his 29.7-point scoring average.

"They did a good job of keeping Colby off the block tonight," said Douma.

Junior guard Kyle Smith (Grand River, New Hampton HS) led the Dutch with 12 points and added six rebounds. Center Ryan Kunkel (Solon) had eight points and four rebounds. Appearing in his first game of the season after being sidelined by injury, guard Pete Walker (Red Oak) had seven points on 3-of-10 shooting. The Dutch hit just 38.2 percent from the floor overall.

"Our defense wasn't terrible tonight," said Douma. "Our offense really struggled. We did not shoot the basketball well and we weren't rebounding our misses."

Central returns to action Saturday when the University of Wis.-Platteville travels to Pella for a 3 p.m. non-conference game at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. The Pioneers (5-1) are coming off a 57-40 upset victory over No. 6-ranked North Central College (Ill.) Tuesday night. Saturday's contest starts a three-game homestand for the Dutch. Central hosts the University of Dubuque December 7and Washington University-St. Louis (Mo.) December 10.
