Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Taylor leads Dutch over Pioneers in men’s basketball victory

PELLA — Senior forward Colby Taylor (Creston) poured in 34 points and added 15 rebounds in the Central College's men's basketball 86-77 win over Wis.-Platteville Saturday.

Wis-Platteville (5-2) entered the contest coming off an upset victory over No. 6-ranked North Central College (Ill.) Tuesday night. With the win, Central improved to 5-1 overall this season.

Taylor continues to provide stability for the Dutch. He notched his 28th-career statistical double-double Saturday and is now fourth on the all-time scoring leaderboard at Central with 1,460 career points.

"Colby was a beast today," said coach Craig Douma. "He was able to get hot in the first half and knocked down some 3s for us. I thought in the second half he made some adjustments and scored well inside as well."

Senior guard Pete Walker (Nevada)added 15 points and eight rebounds in his second game back from injury, junior forward Malik Wildermuth (Normal, Ill., University HS) added 13 points including 2-for-2 from beyond-the-arc and had two rebounds and junior guard Kyle Smith (Grand River, New Hampton HS) had 11 points and three assists.

"We had a lot of different guys step up and make plays today," said Douma. "Having Pete back allows us to have another driver on the floor. His driving ability helps our shooters. Pete plays solid defense and is a two-way player for us."

Central returns to Iowa Conference play Wednesday at 8 p.m. with the University of Dubuque coming to P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. Dubuque (2-2 overall, 1-1 Iowa Conference) defeated Loras College 96-77 Saturday. The teams last met February 25 in the league tournament semifinals with Central prevailing 72-61.
