CEDAR RAPIDS — Sophomore forward Claire Marburger (Perry)notched her third statistical double-double of the season, but for the first time in the season's opening six games, the Central College women's basketball team was defeated, dropping a 72-59 road decision at Coe College in the Iowa Conference opener for both squads Wednesday.
Marburger led the Dutch (5-1 overall, 0-1 conference) with 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
"Claire had a solid game offensively and had three steals," said coach Chelsea Petersen.
Guard Emily Dine (junior, Oldsmar, Fla., East Lake HS) added 15 points with three assists. But Dine and Marburger were the only Central players to score in double digits.
"Offensively more players will need to contribute," Petersen said.
Both teams forced 19 turnovers, however Coe's was better able to capitalize.
"We played well for stretches, but ultimately it came down to turnovers and Coe's 29 points-off turnovers," said Petersen.
The matchup was a test for the Dutch.
"Tonight was a good opportunity for us to see Iowa Conference competition," said Petersen. "Ultimately, competition provides an opportunity to assess areas of weakness and improve. We look forward to improving and taking the court again Saturday."
The Dutch travel to Milwaukee, Wis., Saturday for a 3 p.m. non-conference matchup with Mount Mary University (Wis.). Mount Mary (1-4) has lost four consecutive games. It's the teams' first-ever meeting.
