STORM LAKE. — For the second time this season, the Central College women's soccer team held an opponent to zero shot attempts on its way to 3-0 victory in Iowa Conference play at Buena Vista University Wednesday.
The zero shot attempts by an opposing team ties a school record while the Dutch (13-2-1 overall, 5-1 Iowa Conference) also set the program high for victories in a season.
"That's kind of been our team all year," coach Mike Kobylinski said. "I thought the whole team defended really well. Anytime you can outshoot a team 17-0 away from home, you must be having a good day."
Goalkeepers Sydney Lunardi (senior, Bettendorf, Davenport Assumption HS) and Savana Robinson (senior, Des Moines, Hoover HS) combined to pick up the team's 11th shutout of the year, one shy of tying the school record.
For the second game in a row, freshman forward Erin Manion (Delafield, Wis., Kettle Moraine HS) tallied two goals. She now has a team-high nine goals on the season, six of them coming against conference opponents.
"If you get Erin front of goals she does great things," Kobylinski said. "She's one of the best finishers I've ever seen as a freshman. I'm really happy with what she's doing but also excited about what she can become."
Midfielder Lauryn Kramer (sophomore, Cedar Falls) and defender Jackie Sunderman (junior, Pella) assisted on Manion's first and second goals, respectively.
Starting in the midfield, senior Kayla Sunvold (Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) collected her eighth assist of the season when she found midfielder Olivia Denham (sophomore, Bondurant, Bondurant-Farrar HS) just two minutes into the second half.
"Kayla served a fantastic ball and Olivia tucked it away nicely," Kobylinski said.
A trip to Decorah to play first-place Luther College on Saturday will go a long way to determining Central's postseason outlook.
"It's going to take our entire team playing well," Kobylinski said. "Playing at Luther can be tough and it's going to take some solid teamwork."
The match starts at 1 p.m. on Luther's campus.
