DECORAH — Conceding two goals in less than two minutes doomed the Central College women's soccer team as they were sent home in defeat 2-0 by Luther College Saturday.
After the two teams played to a draw in the first half, the Norse (10-2-2, 6-0-1) got a goal at the 51:55 mark from Hanna Christopher. Just 65 seconds later, Ellie Bunz struck again for the Norse at 53:00 to make it 2-0.
"For us to hold a potent offense like Luther to a 0-0 was pretty good," coach Mike Kobylinski said. "We did pretty well keeping them off the scoreboard for 89 minutes."
Aside from the unfortunate 65-second time frame, the Dutch (13-3-1, 5-2-0 Iowa Conference)) defense frustrated the Norse offensive attack.
"I thought we pretty played well for the most part defensively," "There's some things we need to work on still. Luther's a very good team."
A breakout offensive star in recent matches, freshman forward Erin Manion (Delafield, Wis., Kettle Moraine HS) was limited to just one shot attempt.
"At times, she had to battle against double teams," Kobylinski said. "Overall, I still thought she played well.
Kobylinski also cited junior midfielder Felicia Roppe (Council Bluffs, St. Albert HS).
"She gave us some great minutes off the bench," he said. "It's nice to see her do well because she's a very good team player."
In Tuesday's regular-season finale, Central hosts Wartburg College (10-3-2, 5-1-1 ) at 12:30 p.m. with seeding in the Iowa Conference tournament at stake. Central could earn as high as the No. 2 seed, with other results from around the conference factoring in as well.
"There's some big points up for grabs," Kobylinki said. "We'll be ready to put together a full 90-minute match.
