PELLA — Erin Manion (freshman, Delafield, Wis., Kettle Moraine HS)provided two goals in the Central College 3-0 win over the University of Dubuque (6-8-1 overall, 2-4 conference) Saturday.
Central (12-2 overall, 4-1 Iowa Conference) continued its stellar defense on the season with its 10th shutout of the year.
"It was a total team effort today," said coach Mike Kobylinski. "We had six different defenders that were able to provide great minutes. Kelsey Roxworthy (senior, St. Charles, Ill., East HS), Lauren Goeke (sophomore, Ballwin, Mo., Parkway South HS), Jackie Sunderman (junior, Pella), Amanda Rodriguez (junior, Grimes, Dallas Center-Grimes), Kayla Dowell (junior, Cedar Falls) and Caitlyn Champ (sophomore, Kearney, Mo.)have been great defensively for us all year."
Manion tallied her sixth and seventh goals on the year, Olivia Dunham (sophomore, Bondurant, Bondurant-Farrar HS) assisted on Manion's final goal. Fellow freshman Mikaela Erickson (Spring Lake, Mich., Western Michigan Christian HS) capitalized on an assist from Hailey Budke (sophomore, Leavenworth, Kan., Lansing HS) for Erickson's third goal of the season.
"Those two freshmen have been outstanding this season," said Kobylinski. "Erin is a tall forward that is composed on the field. Mikaela was recruited to play on defense but we also told her she was going to play on the outside after seeing her shot. She's now starting to understand the technical parts of the game."
The opening half was a bit of an anomaly for the Dutch, according to Kobylinski.
"We weren't playing our normal style of soccer in the opening frame," he said. "We weren't controlling the possession the way that we are accustomed to, but we were able to change that in the second half."
Central returns to action Wednesday at Buena Vista University (3-10-1 overall, 0-5 conference). The Dutch will look to extend their current winning streak to three games.
