Central rolls to doubleheader sweep of Martin Luther in baseball

NEW ULM, MINN. -- After a pair of tough losses Tuesday, the Central College baseball team left little doubt about the outcomes of either game Wednesday, putting up bunches of runs early against Martin Luther College (Minn.) to win 13-9 and 18-0.

Making his first career start on the mound, Caleb Rangel (sophomore, Rock Island, Alleman HS) gave himself run support in the first inning of game one when he tripled to left field driving in second baseman David Lakin (sophomore, Clinton). Right fielder Jarred Lackey (sophomore, Somerton, Ariz., Cibola HS) put the Dutch ahead 2-0 with a single to left field.

Rangel struggled a bit in the first inning as Martin Luther (9-21) managed to string together three straight hits after a base on balls and a hit batter to score three runs. But that was all the Knights would get off Rangel (2-1) who pitched 5.0 innings and struck out eight.

In the second inning left fielder B.J. Pilling (senior, Denison) drove in two runs on a single to center and Lackey drove in another run, putting the Dutch up 5-3. The score held up until the top of the fifth when the Dutch racked up eight runs on seven hits, including two doubles from shortstop Mike Furlong (freshman, Davenport, Assumption HS). The Dutch racked up 19 hits in game one, just one hit shy of the school record, and each position starter had at least two hits.

Senior Chris Tibbals (Lime Spring, Crestwood HS) replaced Rangel on the mound to start the sixth inning, giving up five runs in 0.2 innings before giving way to sophomore Anthony Miller (Davenport, Assumption HS) who pitched the final 1.1 innings and gave up the one run to make the final score 13-9.

In game two Central held a 7-0 lead before Martin Luther recorded a single out. Aided by three errors from the Knights the Dutch scored nine runs on give hits in the opening frame. Central racked up another 15 hits, including five doubles and a triple to make it 34 hits for the day.

Junior Josh Nalan (Sheffield, SCMT HS) started game two for the Dutch, striking out two and pitching 2.0 innings. He was followed by freshman Joel Pulliam (Des Moines, Lincoln HS) who went one inning and earned the win, Lackey who struck who struck out three in 2.0 innings and sophomore Shane Nelson (Iowa City) who threw 2.0 innings and gave up no hits.

Central (14-19 overall, 7-11 Iowa Conference) is off this weekend but will travel to Mount Vernon April 29 for a single game against Cornell College (6-20, 3-11 conference) at 6 p.m
