Why did you choose Central?


I originally only visited Central because my parents encouraged me to look at a few schools in the area. I wasn’t even sure there was an engineering program. After my first visit, I learned more about the engineering/physics program (which was real) and got to talk with Coach Ferrell about playing tennis. Ultimately, the strength of both academics and athletics, as well as a good scholarship (thanks Pella Corp!), sealed the deal for me.

Favorite professor and why?

This is a tough one. I haven’t had a professor here that I’ve disliked, especially within physics and engineering. If pressed on the issue, I would have to pick Dr. Martisvotis. You can tell that he takes a vested interest in every student, both in and out of the classroom. He’s also very funny.

You’re double majoring in engineering and physics because?

I’ve always enjoyed math and problem-solving, and engineering seemed like a natural choice to me. Central’s engineering program works very closely with its physics program, making it really easy to double major.

Besides athletics, what else are you involved in on campus?

I play percussion in both the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Steel Pan Band, am the student hall director of Gaass Hall, and am the president of our newly founded Engineering Club.

Who are your go-to musical artists?

I listen to a lot of older rock music, with my favorite bands being Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Nirvana. I’ve also been listening to a lot of America recently, especially while doing homework.

How has attending Central and playing a sport impacted your life?

Managing my time effectively between academics, sports, and other campus organizations has been one of the biggest things I’ve learned at Central. I’ve found that if you really enjoy things, learning to manage time effectively between them doesn’t seem like a burden.

Favorite professional tennis player?

I’ve recently become a big fan of Lerner Tien. Despite not being the biggest hitter, he plays a really smart game. It does make me a little sad that he’s younger than me.

If you could live in a book, tv show or movie, what would it be?

Maybe not the safest option, but I would choose the Lord of the Rings. They were my favorite books growing up, and I also really like the movies.

What’s the dumbest way you’ve ever been injured?

When I was younger, I chipped off half of my tooth while playing tackle football in my basement, which has a concrete floor.

What teammate has a hidden talent?

Hayden can do a very impressive crow impression. If I was blindfolded in a room with a crow and Hayden, I could not tell the difference.

Favorite TV Show

I don’t watch a lot of TV, but I have enjoyed watching Outer Banks. I admittedly like the earlier seasons more but am still excited about season 5 coming soon.

What’s it like to compete for Coach Ferrell?

Competing for Coach Ferrell has been awesome. He does a good job of knowing the strengths of every player, and leveraging them to become the best tennis player they can be. It’s easy to see that he cares about all our success on the court, but also out in the real world.

What’s your favorite part about being a member of Central’s men’s tennis team?

My teammates. Being on this team has allowed me to meet some of my best friends, and I’ve built strong connections with everyone. After long days of classes and exams, getting to train and compete with them is the best part of my day.

What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?

I plan on attending grad school for engineering after Central. In 10 years, I’d like to be working in the field, living somewhere closer to the mountains, and spending my free time hiking.

Favorite food from Central Market

I’m a big breakfast guy, especially CTO eggs and avocado toast. I also remain hopeful that brisket quesadillas will make a return someday.

Bucket list

I really enjoy traveling and have already been to so many amazing places. In the future, I would like to visit every national park in America (19 so far), and do some backpacking internationally.
