Cole McGriff
Grinnell, Iowa
Class of 2025

Why did you chose Central?

I chose Central for three reasons. First, I chose Central was because it was relatively close to my hometown of Grinnell. Second, I chose Central because of it’s beautiful campus and Christian faith background. I knew this would be the place where I could grow both academically and spiritually for the better. Lastly, I chose Central because of its incredible athletic facilities. It was the only school I visited that had an on-campus Golf range, chipping green, and putting green.

Favorite professor and why?

This is tough. Every professor I have had has been incredible. Three professors stick out to me: Dr. Mark Thomas, Dr. Keith Jones, and Dr. Barloon. Dr. Thomas, my academic advisor, has a strong passion for Philosophy that inspires me. The discussions we have in class are very meaningful, I will certainly miss them. Dr. Jones is a passionate professor with an incredible sense of humor. He keeps things light and personable in class while still doing an incredible job of educating his students. Dr. Barloon is incredibly sharp and witty. His knowledge of U.S. History, particularly the Civil War is so valuable. I love sitting in his lectures and just soaking in all the knowledge he has to offer his students.

You’re majoring in philosophy because?

I am majoring in Philosophy and minoring in Psychology because these are two areas of academia that I find interesting. Both have helped me learn more about myself and the world throughout my time here at Central.

Besides athletics, what else are you involved in on campus?

Besides Golf, I am a member of the Student Senate and attend FCA events when I can. I am also a youth group leader at the Mix (third reformed church). I have led the same group of kids since my freshman year of college. They were half my size when I began with them in 6th grade, and now they are 8th graders who are as tall if not taller than me.

Who are your go-to musical artists?

Ed Sheeran and Benson Boone

How has attending Central and playing a sport impacted your life?

I have become a better person through my time here at Central. I have grown stronger in my faith and developed a better understanding of how the world works. Playing Golf has given me many valuable experiences, I will remember the team bus rides to competitions and spring break trips for the rest of my life. I am grateful to be apart of the Central College mens golf team.

Which course anywhere in the world is your dream to play on?

Augusta National. I love the Masters.

What is the weirdest scar you have and how did you get it?

I have a scar in my lower abdomen from going under the knife for a left inguina hernia repair, the summer before my senior year of high school. It’s not pretty.

Which if your clubs do you trust the most?

Driver

Which animated show or movie do you want to live in?

Kung Fu Panda

Favorite TV Show

Arrow (CW)

What’s it like to play for Coach Blasi?

An absolute joy. Coach Blasi is a great coach and person. We have had plenty of great conversations on bus rides to competitions. He gives me incredible advice for my golf game, especially my mental game. I owe a lot of the progress I have made in my golf game over the years here to Coach Blasi.

What’s your favorite part about being a member of the Central men’s golf team?

The bus rides to competitions and competing on the course for my teammates. We all want to play well for each other, and I think that brings the best out of each of our individual games.

What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?

Either playing professional golf or practicing law, maybe own a law firm.

Favorite food from Central Market

Greek Vanilla yogurt with peanut butter, honey and grapes. Peanut butter and honey go in first, then apply yogurt, then drop some grapes on it and your set.

2. Spend a week in Athens Greece, visiting some Philosophy museums and sites.
