Rachel Pella
Kansas City, Mo.
Class of 2023

Why did you choose Central?

I chose Central because it felt like home to me. The campus environment  is so warm and welcoming.  I knew that this was the place that I would be able to excel both personally and academically.

Favorite professor and why?

I would have to go with Dave Pavlat. Not only because he’s a great professor and he just wants to share his knowledge with everyone, but he is also just an amazing guy. Dave has been like a dad to me ever since I walked on campus and I can’t imagine being at Central without him.

You’re majoring in exercise science because?

I chose the major in Exercise Science because I knew I wanted to do something medically related and I felt that exercise science was the right path for me. The courses offered in this major allowed me to explore my interests which have led me to pursue physical therapy as my future career.

Besides athletics, what else are you involved with on campus?

I am involved in the SI tutoring program for EXSC-111 as well as a member of SAAC on campus.

Who are your go-to artists?

I would have to go with Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs but with a dash of Justin Bieber.

How has attending Central and playing a sport impacted your life?

Being a part of the Central volleyball team has allowed me to grow as a person and as an athlete. I have been able to explore my interests as well as stretch my limits to find the kind of person I want to be. I would not feel as confident and comfortable in my abilities without the help of my teammates, the coaching staff, and all my professors at Central.

Did you feel like you had to go to college in a city that shared your last name?

I mean I kinda of had to…. I will not lie, I didn't even know there was a town named Pella until Coach Czipri reached out to me in the recruiting process, but once I visited the campus and the town I knew this was the place for me. It was truly meant to be.

Best BBQ in KC

Hands down Q39. There’s a few locations in the Kansas City area. I know it is not one of the classics, but I love their pulled pork and burnt ends!

When did you first realize you loved playing volleyball?

When I was little I was the kid that played every sport; soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball, you name it and I probably did it. But in 5th grade I started playing volleyball competitively and just loved every second of it. I loved how competitive and comfortable I was on the court so I just never stopped.

Who is the funniest person on the team?

We have a lot of jokesters on the team but Gwen is a special kind of funny. She was kind of quiet at first but once she opened up we really saw her amazing, funny personality. I can always count on Gwen to make me laugh whether its during practice, in the weight room, or at the market.

Favorite tv show

My OG favorite show is Grey’s Anatomy, and yes I have watched and loved all 18 of its seasons. But I finish the Criminal Minds series this past year and love it! I am a weenie when it comes to scary stuff, but I love the mystery of each episode!

What’s it like to play for Coach Czipri?

You never know what to expect from coach! Some of the drills she draws up for practice may seem a bit weird, but she is always finding new ways to make us better both individually and as a team. She cares about each of her players so much, and she not only wants us to come out of Central volleyball’s program as a better athlete but also a better woman and student.

What’s your favorite part about being a member of the Central volleyball team?

My teammates are the best part of the program. I have been able to meet so many amazing people through this program including some of my lifelong friends. I just love the community and the bond that is created within the program. We all have so much love for each other, it allows us to be even better teammates for each other.

What do you hope to be doing in 10 years

In 10 years I hope to be working as a physical therapist in Kansas City. I would also love to be starting, have at least 2 dogs (preferably corgis), and just loving life!

Favorite food at Central Market

Fruit pizza for sure. I always have to grab extra to take back to my room.

Bucket list

I would love to travel to Greece so badly to live out my Mama Mia dream. I also really want to skydive as well as ride a mechanical bull.
